Steel For Brains: Sound as Language - A Conversation with Boris
The way it works is you pass on a CD to a friend and preface it with the words: “They’re from Japan. Just listen.” The thing is with Boris - that’s just not near damn enough to say. Sixteen years later after the band’s inception, they continue to not simply reinvent the wheel but instead take the thing of the axle and make it completely different. Like any great group of musicians and artists, they don’t let any barriers stand in their way. They’ve done countless collaborations with other incredible artists such as but not limited to Keiji Haino, Sunn O))), Michio Kurihara, Ian Astbury, and many more. I don’t know that the Melvins realized that their song would spawn such a diverse and sonically tenacious band like Boris, but I can only imagine they see it as an enormous compliment that after seventeen studio albums (not counting the myriad of collaborations), Boris is in no mood to quit and certainly in no mood to turn down the volume. I recently had an email exchange/conversation with Atsuo regarding the band’s history and their own sense of the art they create:
Since the band’s formation in 1996, you guys have certainly evolved your sound from definitive metal to sludge to experimental and even what might be considered pop. How difficult has it been for you all to sort of be able to maintain the Boris sound while still crossing barriers of music from a genre standpoint?
To us it has not been so difficult to maintain our sound since we can catch possible vision and atmosphere when hearing our own recorded music so carefully. However, in that case the member’s own identity and ego are left behind and ignored frequently. That means ‘music first’ method would shake down members. In order to preserve the balance of our feeling we need to overlook ourselves. Sometimes we feel scary about that.
Language barriers seem to disappear in the wake of music - no matter what genre it may be. When you listen to Boris, no matter what your language might be, the connection is immediately there. How do you approach the art you create in not allowing the issue of language to impede the process?
I don’t really care about language barriers at all. If there is, people try to ‘feel’ something instead of communicating with languages. In fact music is to feel, right? Communication should start from where people can’t understand each other perfectly. That is so natural and to start from there is the best way, I believe.
Boris has worked with numerous artists/musicians here in the states. How is the music scene different here than in your native Japan?
Totally different on everything. For example physically, we can’t play instruments the way western people do. And Western music scene and Japan has their own history of rock music.

Readers of this site are probably aware that Japan is a fascinating place. While its public face seems very conservative, you don’t have to dig very far to find odd or even bizarre activity. In this case, we’re talking about bondage, S&M, leather & PVC. Welcome to Japan’s fetish scene.
Fetish bars can be found in most large Japanese cities (Arcadia - www.bar-arcadia.com, for instance, has bars in both Tokyo and Osaka) and are an easy introduction to the scene. They are similar in many respects to hostess bars in that you will generally have a companion to sit and drink with you. In this case, though, she will likely be wearing an outfit of leather or PVC and have an interest in either tying or being tied up. Systems vary for different bars but be prepared to spend 10,000 yen or more. Some places have nightly shows where you’re likely to see some rope bondage along with dripping candle wax and some light whipping. But even if there isn’t a show, your drinking companion may be willing to tie you up. You know, just for fun.
Another way to check out the scene is to go to one of the many events. These are generally cheaper than going to a fetish bar but you may need to commit more time. Midnight Mess (www.midnightmess.com) is a monthly cross-over event with Gothic/Industrial DJs and a variety of acts. One will usually be a rope bondage performance but there are also musical and variety acts. The Tokyo Kink Society (www.tksociety.com) also sponsors events, but many of those have strict dress codes. If you’re interested in attending one of those, you may need to invest in some leather or PVC outfits. If you plan on attending a fetish event, make sure you understand the dress code (if any).
Japan is a great place to discover a new world of kink. With just a little bit of homework and a bit more yen, you can be on your way. Enjoy.
The year is half over, but I’ve already been floored by two of awesome gigs put on by Acid Mothers Temple and Guitar Wolf. Both tours are over here in the states, but AMT still has a handful of upcoming shows in Japan and Guitar Wolf will be rocking a path of destruction in Europe this July.
Coming back to the east coast almost a year later, Acid Mothers Temple and the Melting Paraiso U.F.O. played a hazy and loud set at Great Scott in Allston, Massachusetts. I made it a point to stand on the right side of the stage this time in order to get my face completely melted by Kawabata Makoto and his far-out guitar play. Watching him play is witnessing some crazy space age sacrament; almost otherworldly in its scope and pace. It is a furious performance that even when the tempo is slowed down from light speed it still smacks your eardrums dizzy. The whole band taps into this raw energy, playing off of each other such intensity that few can compete with. Japan Tour Dates: http://www.acidmothers.com/cgi-bin/live/liveen.html#DOMESTIC
By comparison Guitar Wolf plays with a very different sound, but they bring the same amount of power and energy behind them. Playing at the Church of Boston, it was a full Sunday night of cracked noses, broken beer bottles, and, of course, “Rock ‘n’ Roll!” Right as the first guitar note was played, fans were chucking beer cups and raging into a mosh pit. They play fast and loud and the whole crowd fed into frenzy that by the end of the night people were invited (including myself) into a human pyramid on stage. A nice and unexpected surprise to end the show was a double encore with the final one featuring a solo guitar performance by Seiji. Truly some very heavy hitting rock n’ roll. If you live anywhere near where one of these bands will be playing in the coming month, do make it a point to go and see them. They still mainly play in low key venues, but the energy they bring could fill an arena.
How does one recapture a lost art of Japan that existed a few hundred years ago? Even more complex, how does one recapture this art through a completely different medium: scent? Black Phoenix Alchemy Lab of North Hollywood, California rose to create this challenge. As an experimental perfume oil and aroma creator, they specialize in “formulating intriguing, compelling body and household blends with a dark, romantic, and sexual tone”. A recent two month limited edition series of five scented oils named 'Holding Back The Night' was released earlier than its original planned summer date in support of the recent events in Japan. Benefits of sales go to Doctors Without Borders to contribute to current tsunami disaster relief.
The 'Holding Back The Night' series is directly inspired by a famous artist Yoshitoshi, known as the last master of Japanese woodblock print art. Woodblock art, or Ukiyo-e (literally “floating world”), sought to vividly show the true beauty of the pleasures and perils of the world outside the normal daily work routine. Black Phoenix succeeded in capturing Yoshitoshi’s imagery and essence of vivid celebration of ‘in the moment’ detail. Two bottles from the 'Holding Back The Night' series was sent to abstractjapan.com courtesy of a dear friend.
II NO HAYATA KILLS THE NUE AT THE IMPERIAL PALACE Brown musk, antiqued amber, black pepper, tolu balsam, and West Indian Bay.
LORD TEISHIN WITH A DEMON BEHIND A SCREEN Blood red musk, Spanish mandarin, candied red fruits, Chinese geranium, red pepper, and effervescent tangerine pulp.
These scents are quite hard to describe, but for all the best reasons. They create more of a feeling and image than words. You can almost feel yourself immediately transport to the vivid colorful subjects of Yoshitoshi’s woodblock art: musky but sweet smelling Geisha houses, fierce yet refined warriors and royalty, rumbling sea storms, demons, and lovers.
